ISO 9000:2015 Fundamental Concepts in QA Simple Tip to Improve Communication in Quality
When we talk about quality management systems, many people immediately think about ISO 9001, audits, or certifications. But before all of that, there is a foundation that is often overlooked: ISO 9000:2015 Fundamentals and Vocabulary.
In my experience, this standard is one of the best guides to understanding the language of quality.
If you are starting in the world of QA or food safety, ISO 9000 helps you understand key concepts such as:
Customer focus
Leadership
Engagement of people
Process approach
Improvement
Evidence based decision making
Relationship management
They may seem like simple terms, but they are actually the foundation of the language used in audits, management systems, and certification schemes, especially when working under GFSI recognized standards or ISO frameworks.
It is essentially the language of audits and communication with auditors.
During internal audits, for example, it is very important to have a solid understanding of these technical terms and to be able to translate them into simple language that our colleagues on the production floor can easily understand.
Questions such as:
• What is the difference between preventive action and corrective action? Which comes first?
• What is validation vs verification, and what is their order?
• What exactly is monitoring?
• What really counts as objective evidence?
• What does risk-based thinking or risk-based approach actually mean?
When everyone speaks the same “quality language”, and more importantly when everyone understands it, conversations become clearer, more professional, and better aligned with international standards.
For QA professionals, ISO 9000 is much more than a glossary.
It is a common language that connects auditors, companies, authorities, and certification bodies around the world.
Sometimes, going back to the fundamentals is the best way to strengthen our practice in quality.
Because quality is not only about audits, procedures, records, risk analysis, CCPs, or OPRPs.
It is about understanding the principles behind them.
